Help Camp Beaverton sex up Burning Man!

  • Aug. 5th, 2010 at 9:15 AM
Lame'
Dear Friends, Family, and all-around fabulous people,

I hope this email finds you all well and enjoying the summer!

As you know, the Burning Man Arts Festival is an event very, very important to be. For one week every summer, thousands of people get together to create a huge arts and community event and experiment in the desert in Nevada. In order to facilitate this huge number of people, individual camps were created catering to specific interests and art projects, as well as to provide shade structures and smaller community spaces. I have been deeply influenced and involved in Camp Beaverton: Camp for Wayward Girls, the lesbian/queer/trans/gender-variant camp at Burning Man.

Burning Man practices a gifting economy, meaning that nothing is sold on Playa, and everything brought for the community is brought there by the community. In order for our camp to exist, we need to fund raise to provide this amazing space and resource to women and trans/gender-variant people at Burning Man.

This year, we have a Kickstarter fundraiser. This is an incredible website that is a launching pad for art projects and small communities. This is a pledge drive, so every donor contributes to our goal amount; however, no one is charged for their donation UNLESS WE MEET OUR GOAL OF $2250 and we've just got 13 days to do it.

PLEASE HELP US MEET OUR GOAL AND RAISE MONEY FOR CAMP BEAVERTON. Time is of the essence as we will be going to Burning Man on August 24th, so we only have two weeks to raise this money! Please donate as soon as possible if you can!

For detailed information about Camp Beaverton and where exactly your donations will go, and to DONATE, visit our incredible Kickstarter page:

Hi Folks,

I’m writing to ask for your HELP! As you may have guessed finding a roommate this time of year is kinda tough. Everyone is busy hibernating and few folks are looking for a new home. We’ve been waiting for the right fit as you know CASA DE QUEER is a very special place!

Could you please take a moment and THINK if you know of anyone who MIGHT be looking for a new queertastic home? You would have my eternal gratitude! Please try and forward this info to at LEAST ONE person. The best way to find someone is through our local queer grapevine.

I hope the New Year is treating you right!

Hi folks,

Just thought I'd drop a line that we are still looking for the perfect third roomie to complete our happy house!

Details HERE
sassy hair

Casa de Queer is looking for the perfect new roommate!

ROOM FOR RENT: $388/month queer-friendly, trans friendly & People of color-friendly only please. The room is available immediately; ideally we're looking for someone to move in who is willing to sign a lease through Sept 30, 2010 (our lease goes month to month at that time).  BUT we will consider short term or month to month options as well.

We have a lovely five bedroom, two story house in SE Decatur (off Candler by South Dekalb Mall). Between Memorial and I-20

Upstairs: One and a half bath, hardwood floors, big kitchen, dining room, and living room, two bedrooms and the computer room. Downstairs: all tile, TV room with kitchenette, master bathroom/bedroom, washer & dryer, huge fenced in backyard. Outside we have plenty of driveway and street parking, covered porch with a grill and comfy chairs for enjoying outside, and a beautiful shady green lawn. The room available is an upstairs bedroom.  Rent is $388, not including 1/3rd of utilities (gas, electric, wireless, yard, and water.) Deposit is $388. We have two wonderful cats, and three tiny adorably little dogs, so anyone with allergies may not be a good fit.  Our house is also NOT MARTA friendly, we live on lots of major bus lines, but as you know it can take a while to get anywhere on a MARTA bus.

We need a special person for this place. You would be living with two grown and sexy people, in our early 30’s. We are fairly clean, one of us if vegetarian and the other is a meat eater, outside smokers ok, and we love to cook and laugh and enjoy ourselves. One of us works in the non-profit sector the other is a professional chef.

Hi Folks!

It's that time of year again! I've just completed my first year as a board member for COLAGE. This year I'm just asking 19 friends for $19 each in honor of COLAGE's 19th anniversary! This organization means SO MUCH to me as a person with LGBT parents. I know, I know I'm super blessed to have 5 parents, 3 of them being lesbian moms.

COLAGE is making connections nationwide with youth and adults with LGBTQ parents. Our work is live-changing and revolutionary. Recently we:
• Held a week-long camp for youth of LGBT parents in Provincetown, MA
• Are bringing the first ever activist Speak Out Camp to Atlanta, GA
• Did state-wide community education around Prop 8 in California

Won't you please make a $19 donation in honor of my work with COLAGE today?

Hi Folks,

Asha Leong and Umayr Hassan had the opportunity to attend the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Conference in Seattle, WA this past August.  We found it an amazing time of learning, networking, and community building.  We think its important to share what we learned with our local Trikone and APLBTN community. Please join us Wed Oct 7th, 7pm at Noodle for dinner and discussion about  the conference and bringing some of the lessons learned to the ATL.

Highlights included:
-national immigration campaign
-sexual liberation workshop
-amazing plenary speakers including local Mia Mingus!

We would love to see the energy from this conference come to Atlanta and inspire more LGBTQ Asian organizing!

Please let us know you are coming by emailing femmetron@gmail.com.

Thanks ya'll!

This article would have been useful when I called that guy a racist last week.  I HATE having to call people out but what he did was just RIDIC.  And frankly I'm NOT GOOD at having these convos with white folks who are just beginning on an anti-racist path.  But articles like this are GREAT!  Thank god I was surrounded by allies and went for bat for myself but didn't really need to b/c my allies had it covered.

Racism is a fact of life AND we all need ways of talking about it better.  That's what I think this article does...

Science ponders zombie attack!

  • Aug. 18th, 2009 at 10:15 AM

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8206280.stm

If zombies actually existed, an attack by them would lead to the collapse of civilisation unless dealt with quickly and aggressively.

Read more... )</div>
Professor Neil Ferguson
</td> </tr> </tbody></table>

In their study, the researchers from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University (also in Ottawa) posed a question: If there was to be a battle between zombies and the living, who would win?

Professor Robert Smith? (the question mark is part of his surname and not a typographical mistake) and colleagues wrote: "We model a zombie attack using biological assumptions based on popular zombie movies.

"We introduce a basic model for zombie infection and illustrate the outcome with numerical solutions."

On his university web page, the mathematics professor at Ottawa University says the question mark distinguishes him from Robert Smith, lead singer of rock band The Cure.

FROM THE TODAY PROGRAMME

To give the living a fighting chance, the researchers chose "classic" slow-moving zombies as our opponents rather than the nimble, intelligent creatures portrayed in some recent films.

"While we are trying to be as broad as possible in modelling zombies - especially as there are many variables - we have decided not to consider these individuals," the researchers said.

Back for good?

Even so, their analysis revealed that a strategy of capturing or curing the zombies would only put off the inevitable.

In their scientific paper, the authors conclude that humanity's only hope is to "hit them [the undead] hard and hit them often".

They added: "It's imperative that zombies are dealt with quickly or else... we are all in a great deal of trouble."

According to the researchers, the key difference between the zombies and the spread of real infections is that "zombies can come back to life".

Professor Neil Ferguson, who is one of the UK government's chief advisors on controlling the spread of swine flu, said the study did have parallels with some infectious diseases.

"None of them actually cause large-scale death or disease, but certainly there are some fungal infections which are difficult to eradicate," said Professor Ferguson, from Imperial College London.

"There are some viral infections - simple diseases like chicken pox has survived in very small communities. When you get it when you are very young, the virus stays with you and can re-occur as shingles, triggering a new chicken pox epidemic."

Professor Smith? told BBC News: "When you try to model an unfamiliar disease, you try to find out what's happening, try to approximate it. You then refine it, go back and try again."

"We refined the model again and again to say... here's how you would tackle an unfamiliar disease."

Professor Ferguson joked: "The paper considers something that many of us have worried about - particularly in our younger days - of what would be a feasible way of tackling an outbreak of a rapidly spreading zombie infection.

"My understanding of zombie biology is that if you manage to decapitate a zombie then it's dead forever. So perhaps they are being a little over-pessimistic when they conclude that zombies might take over a city in three or four days," he said.
